Between one million and over 1.5 million people marched through several German cities – especially in the east of the country – against the far-right and the Alternativ für Deutschland (AfD), between January 19 and 21, according to an organisation that took part in the rally. The mobilisation, larger than even the organisers had anticipated, follows the shock caused by an investigation published by the investigative media outlet Correctiv in early January, which revealed a secretive meeting between representatives of the far right and members of the AfD. During the meeting, they discussed a plan to “remigrate” people with a migrant background.

The pro-democracy mobilisation comes as the far right in Germany continue their breakthrough in popularity, with the AfD rising to second place in the polls.
