MASKED Singer champ Danny Jones has revealed his McFly bandmates had to be silenced by ITV during his stint on the show.

Danny was on tour with Tom Fletcher, Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter when the series was filmed and he struggled to keep his spot on the programme a secret.

The Voice UK Kids judge needed to keep disappearing off to record as Piranha, so ITV came up with a way to stop his secret from getting out.

Speaking on Heart FM’s Breakfast Show, winner Danny told hosts Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston that the entire band had to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement – aka an NDA.

Also known as a Confidentiality Agreement, the legally binding contract meant Tom, Harry and Dougie couldn’t utter a word to anyone.

Danny, 37, said: “I had to tell them, we all signed NDAs, right. I had to tell them because I was on tour whilst filming this.”

Being sarcastic, he joked: “‘Guys, you know, I’ve got to pop off to be a fish… Sorry I can’t play at Ally Pally tonight as I’m busy being Piranha!'”

Danny continued: “So I had to tell them and they were like, ‘Mate, please tell us you won it?’ I was like, ‘Listen, I can’t say’.”

His wife Georgia was also in on the secret, although they kept it from their six-year-old son Cooper.

But this also proved difficult each morning when Danny had to leave the house to head to the Masked Singer studios.

“That was the hardest thing – keeping it a secret. Literally, it was the hardest thing,” Danny added.

“I’m not a great liar. Obviously my wife knew, but with kids, you just try and explain it… like,’ Where is Daddy going today?’ because I had to dress in complete disguise to get to the show.

“So I’m leaving the house with a hoodie on that says, ‘Don’t speak to me’, visor, balaclava, gloves on…”

Amanda laughs: “Daddy’s having a bad day?!”

Danny’s secrecy with Cooper was worth it, as a video of his little boy watching his dad get unmasked has since gone viral.

The singer has also admitted that he began to enjoy the mystery around his job on the show.

He told Amanda and Jamie: “I tell you what, I got used to it and I quite liked it.

“You arrive at the set and people are like, ‘Good morning Piranha’ and you’re just nodding as you can’t speak.

“The first couple of days; weird. You just think it’s weird, as it’s against any human traits. But I got used to it and absolutely loved it.”

Danny has kept his special black hoodie as a memento and, with the show now wrapped, he is focusing on McFly‘s 21st anniversary later this year.

The band are holding a huge birthday concert at the O2 Arena in London and Danny is even contemplating rocking up with his Piranha costume.

“I’m down for bringing Piranha out!” Danny laughed. “I’m definitely going to bring Piranha out at some point.”

Danny was in the this year’s Masked Singer final as Piranha alongside Cricket and Big Foot.

Finishing in third place, Cricket was unmasked as pop star and former Fame Academy contestant Lemar.

Runner-up Big Foot, meanwhile, turned out to be TV presenter Alex Brooker.
