A ‘sweet and innocent’ Irish woman who died after being stabbed in a New York City bar was named Sarah McNally, police have said.

McNally, 41, from County Longford but living in Flushing, Queens, was attacked at the Céilí House Bar in Maspeth on Saturday.

She was working behind the Irish pub at the time when she was stabbed in the neck at about 6.30pm local time.

Police found her and an unidentified man suffering from stab wounds in the back and neck.

Witnesses told the New York Post that the man was her boyfriend who ‘walked right in and stabbed her’.

McNally and the man were taken to Elmhurst Hospital. She was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

The man remains in critical condition.

McNally had lived in New York for around a decade, with those who knew her describing her as a ‘beautiful soul’.

Sarah’s aunt Mary McNally wrote on Facebook: ‘We are heartbroken. Rest in peace my beautiful niece Sarah.’

Mike Lambe, 62, told the Post that McNally was a ‘sweet, innocent girl from Longford’.

The landlord who lives nearby said: ‘She was an innocent.’

McNally’s death has shaken Longford, Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus Butler told the Irish Mirror.

He said: ‘Our hearts go out to her family here in Longford and obviously when something like this happens overseas it’s so much more difficult.’

The investigation remains ongoing.
