Three hundred protesting farmers managed to block access for lorries to Motril Port for four hours this morning.

MOT Farmers Protest at Port 04The protesters had gathered early this morning at the Eastern, autovía access to the port. The later spread their action to the other access, thus completely cutting off the port.

Those lorries affected had to remain trapped within the dock area, whereas those attempting to enter the port area had to turn back. This also meant that lorries coming off the ferries were trapped in the port, too.

The protesting farmers were not only local but ones who had arrived from inland Granada and the provinces of Málaga and Almería. Some even dumped half a metric tonne of tomatoes at the entrance.

With the Policía Nacional, who are charged with policing ports, facing the protesters tension ran high when strikers tried to enter the port area. Some even threw tomatoes at the officers.

However, on the whole, the protest went ahead without altercations and it was called off around 13.00h when buses arrived to carry protesters back to where they had come from.
