The leader of the Parti Québécois, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, confirms he received death threats in recent days.

“What was published is true,” he said, regarding the threats that were first reported in the Journal de Montréal.

Visibly upset because the threats were addressed to him and his family, Plamondon had to interrupt his impromptu press briefing Friday and walk away to compose himself for a few moments before continuing his response.

“It’s my private sphere, but everything that is (already) public, I confirm,” he said.

He specified four days passed between receiving the threats and the arrest of a suspect. He praised the Sûreté du Québec police force for its “excellent work.”

“As of today, the investigation is still ongoing,” he added.

The Sûreté du Québec confirmed a complaint had been received on March 4 and investigators had arrested a man from the greater Montreal area on March 8 in relation to threats made against a member of the National Assembly.

The suspect was released with a promise to appear.

The SQ added a search was carried out at the individual’s home, which led to the seizure of computer equipment. The threatening message had been sent by email.

Liberal MP Marwah Rizqy, who herself had endured threats in 2022, wanted to show her support for the PQ leader, his wife and their three children.

“It’s a pretty unsettling time for them,” she said. “No elected official should go through this type of thing.”
