Six people where killed by a lorry in the early hours of today on the AP-4 where it passes through the municipality of Los Palacios in the Province of Sevilla.
This was the result of a lorry driver failing to stop at a Guardia Civil road-check. According to the police the incident occurred at 04.40h when the lorry smashed through the manned control point at kilometre point 24.
Amongst the victims were officers, two of whom died and a third is very seriously injured and two more seriously injured. The road-check had been established to intercept drug traffic on Spanish roads
First indications are that it was an accident: upon seeing the officers waving him down he turned sharply onto the hard shoulder where the parked patrol cars and officers were. He hit three patrol cars and two other road users.
The lorry driver was uninjured. He was immediately tested for drugs & alcohol consumption but reading came back negative.
The Spanish Prime Minister, himself, expressed his condolence on Twitter to the families of those killed and wished for the prompt recovery of those injured. The PM for the Junta de Andalucía also expressed his condolences.
The dead officers are 37-year-old Corporal Eneko del GAR and 34-year-old, Juan Jesús. The four civilians killed was a 47-year-old man from Dos Hermanas, a 50-year-old man from Barbate (Cádiz), a 53-year-old man from Ceuta and a 20-year-old foreign man (nationality not given) living in Vizcaya.
The 59-year-old driver was later taken into custody, as requested by the Public Prosecutor and may face charges of negligent homicide.
