Peter Tinley becomes seventh WA Labor MP to announce retirement ahead of election

Willagee MP Peter Tinley has announced his retirement from politics, making him the seventh WA Labor member to step down ahead of the 2025 state election.

Tinley is a former SAS major and one of the longest-serving Labor MPs in parliament after winning the southern suburbs seat of Willagee at a by-election in 2009 following the retirement of former premier Alan Carpenter.

He has held the safe Labor seat ever since, and currently enjoys a margin of 27.1 per cent.

Tinley was elevated to cabinet after Labor formed government in 2017, holding several portfolios including mines and petroleum, veterans issues, Asian engagement, fisheries and housing.

The right faction member was dumped from cabinet after the 2021 election as left faction numbers swelled in Labor’s backbencher ranks.

Tinley said after 15 years of service in parliament it was time for a new challenge.

“It’s been a great privilege to be the member for Willagee and serve in the Labor Party and the Labor government,” he said.

Tinley’s announcement makes him the seventh MP to announce their retirement ahead of Labor preselections beginning this month.

Women’s Interest Minister Sue Ellery, Attorney-General John Quigley and former minister Bill Johnston will pull the cord on their political careers before the next election.

Backbenchers Lisa Baker, Matthew Hughes and Chris Tallentire have also announced their intention to retire.
