Ottawa has snow in the forecast again, with up to 25 cm on the radar for later this week. And no, this is not a joke.

Environment Canada says Ottawa, as well as other parts of eastern Ontario, could see five to 15 cm of snow on Wednesday, with an additional five to 10 cm of snow in the forecast by Friday.

“Power outages will be possible,” Environment Canada stated in a special weather statement issued for the Ottawa area Monday evening. “Travel may become hazardous due to accumulating snow and reduced visibility.”

It said a Colorado low is expected to begin affecting the region Wednesday morning, and that precipitation is expected to begin as rain before transitioning to snow late Wednesday afternoon or early evening. The snow, expected to be heavy at times, is to continue through Wednesday night, easing Thursday night.

“There remains a high degree of uncertainty with the low’s track, which will have significant impacts on temperatures, snowfall amounts as well as when rain will transition to snow,” the statement read. “Warnings, if required, will be issued as the event draws nearer.”

The week begins with a mix of sun and clouds Monday and Tuesday, with a high of 10 C Monday and 11 C on Tuesday.

Monday night is expected to feel like -9 C with the wind chill.

The snow’s return is forecast to begin overnight Tuesday, with a 30 per cent chance of either showers or flurries and a low of 2 C. The snow or rain will continue into Wednesday, with a high of 3 C during the day and a low of -1 C overnight.

Not much will change Thursday. The day will see continued snow and a high of 1 C, with a 70 per cent chance of flurries overnight.

Friday’s forecast calls for a high of 4 C and cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers, dropping to -1 C overnight.

According to Environment Canada’s Daily Data Report for March 2024, Ottawa’s last snowfall was on March 23 with 1.2 cm of snow.
