Manchester United intend to hand Kobbie Mainoo a new contract after his notable impact on the first team, but the offer will not come until the end of the season.
The 18-year-old has started eight Premier League matches since his first ever top flight start on 26 November at Everton.
Despite the huge amount of money spent on the Manchester United squad it is the teenage youth team product that is catching the eye as much as anyone, especially in the dramatic 4-3 win at Wolves on Thursday night.
Wolves scored a 95th minute equaliser to seemingly rescue a point, but Mainoo expertly curled in a finish two minutes later to secure the latest of winners for his side and a brilliant first Premier League goal.
The youngster signed his first professional deal in 2022 and has since signed a nother contract, as recently as February 2023, which runs until June 2027, with the club holding an option for a further year.
As a result there is no immediate rush for the Red Devils to offer Mainoo new terms, but the Daily Mail report they will do so in the summer.
Clearly his wages will come into line with a player who is starting regularly in the first team rather than a youngster occasionally seen in cup competitions.
Mainoo’s teammates are well aware of the midfielder’s immense talent, with Bruno Fernandes telling TNT Sports after the win at Wolves: ‘He’s a big talent. I have seen it in the past.
‘I saw him play for the Under-18’s two or three years ago and I said to a friend who was in Manchester and wanted to see some youth games, I said at the time the name of Kobbie [was one to watch]. We didn’t know he was going to be this talent and this player.’
Rasmus Hojlund added: ‘We have a generational talent in Kobbie Mainoo. You can see his composure, he is so relaxed on the ball. Now he’s also starting to show that he has the scoring part of his game as well. He’s a complete player.
‘Us young guys, we have a little group and we’re chatting to each other. Hopefully we can set an era for the club and be here many years together.’
