State and city-run museums open in Rome at Easter but Vatican Museums shut.
Italy’s state museums and archaeological sites will be open to the public on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday this year, on 31 March and 1 April 2024.
“The era in which Italian citizens and tourists found museums closed on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday is over”, culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said on Thursday.
A full list of Italy’s museums and heritage sites open over Easter, along with their visiting details, can be found on the Italian culture ministry website.
Rome’s city-run museums, including the Capitoline Museums, will also be open for Pasqua and Pasquetta (Easter Sunday and Easter Monday), with details available on the capital’s website.
In addition to municipal museums, the list includes the newly opened archaeological park on the Caelian Hill, with the Forma Urbis Museum, and the archaeological site at Largo di Torre Argentina.
This means that almost all museums and archaeological sites in Rome will be open to visitors on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, however some cultural landmarks such as Galleria Borghese and the Pantheon require advance booking.

Many museums in Italy that normally close on Monday will shut on Tuesday 2 April instead.
Italy’s most visited cultural sites including the Uffizi, Colosseum and Pompeii will also be open on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, as will Rome’s Botanic Gardens and Villa d’Este in Tivoli.
However the Vatican Museums will be closed on both days, 31 March and 1 April.
