Anybody who has eaten at Restaurante Maitena will know Güéjar Sierra; its winding but beautiful roads. Well, a road bridge up there collapsed because of the rain.
The collapsed bridge goes over Río Maitena and it will be a while before it is open again, between a month and a half and two months, in the opinion of the Mayor of Güéjar Sierra, José Robles.
The road is the one that leads to the restaurants, amongst them the converted, railway station, Restaurante Maitena. The route of the old narrow-gauge line, complete with its tunnels, is now a pleasant walk, running just above the Río Genil as far as Restaurante La Fabriquilla – a well recommended walk!
Anyway, I digress. The point is that the road having been closed will be an economic blow for the said restaurants and for this reason it appears that the Provincial Council will mobilise emergency funding and get it repaired as a priority, according to Provincial-Council Chairman, Francis Rodríguez.
“This morning [yesterday morning] a surveyor was here taking measurements and a construction company has been collaborating with the intention of carrying out the repair work,” said the Mayor of Güéjar Sierra.
The lower end of the road has been closed off and access to La Vereda de la Estrella will be via the A-4030, also known as the Carretera del Hotel del Duque.
