Almuñécar has decided to sell off some of its assets; namely an old school building in the Cotobro area.

ALM Old Cotrobro SchoolThe plot, measuring 151 sq/m has a built area of 80 sq/m. The schoolrooms went out of use decades ago so now the Town Hall is perhaps attempting to ‘balance its books’ to offset expenditure elsewhere.

The Town Hall is offering the property for 41,483 euros, compared with the 84,000 euros that it wanted when it first put it on the market in 2021.

Of course, this is not the only publicly owned property that the Town Hall wants to sell off as it put up for auction several lots, some of which had no takers. The Mayor, Juan José Ruiz Joya, says that having these property on the books is a “weight around the public’s neck.”

Now, one of the properties that the Town Hall has repeatedly tried to sell off is Casa Morgan, which is very controversial. This is because this chalet was privately owned and donated to Almuñécar with the provision that it be used for children as a kindergarten or something along those lines. It was bad enough when the Town Hall under Benavides (I believe) decided to make it into a hostelry school-cum-restaurant but now that they want to sell it off for the funds, is very underhand, many consider.

Two other properties are the Pago de la Majada and the Tropical Fruits warehouse (just behind the fire station). There was also a tremendous scandal concerning the latter, which we will not go into here.

As for other municipal properties that languish in disuse (but not abandoned) are the Palacete del Corregidor and the Horno de Cándida. Nobody has taken on leasing them from the Town Hall. Encarni, who runs the Mirador de Cotobro on the N-340, used to run a restaurante on the top floor of the Palacete del Corregidor, readers might remember.

Finally, the Town hall is trying to sell off the Peña Escrita rural complex…
