The Mayor of Almuñécar, Juanjo Ruiz Joya and the Councillor for Tourism, Daniel Barbero, had a press call to present their latest, intelligent, street furniture.
These new editions are benches with limited shade that offer wifi coverage to anybody who sits on them or passes by.
They have been installed on the seaside promenades of San Cristóbal, La Caletilla, Puerta del Mar, Velilla and La Herradura.
Furthermore, you can also charge your mobile phone or tablet (USBs) get information on the weather (temperature/humidity/ultraviolet) whilst you’re there and all this thanks to solar power.
Mayor Ruiz Joya says that Almuñécar is leading the way (pioneers) when it comes to tourism initiatives, thanks to the Plan de Sostenibilidad Turística provided by the Junta de Andalucía and 100% financed through EU funds (Next Generation).
He also said that in the very near future the Town Hall will publish the terms and condition for the construction of the Parque Azul de Vida Submarina. He said that it will be a “milestone” for the town to have an underwater museum, that will attract divers from all over.
The Councillor for Tourism, Daniel Barbero, says that this addition to the town’s infrastructure had a budget of 189,000 euros and that, “not one euro of it has come from the municipal coffers.”
This kind of infrastructure, denominated Smart Cubes, seems quite normal at first glance but they will improve the lives of locals and visitors alike, he says.
Finally, to be on the safe side, they have GPS trackers to prevent theft. Furthermore, they have sufficient power reserves to run for 48 hours even without sufficient sunlight.
