Yesterday the Sierra Nevada slopes, despite the arrival of spring, had 92.6 km of skiable slopes with a depth of between 100 and 175 cm, making it one of the best ski resorts still open.
With the arrival of the calima and hot wind from North Africa, we shall see, but the fact remains that 50 ski resorts in Southern France (Pyrenees) and most of Spain have closed, but not Sierra Nevada.
In fact, the Asociación de Empresarios de Sierra Nevada wants the resort to stay open until the 1st of May, if the weather holds. Furthermore, this weekend they also have live music (Sun & Snow Festival).
Whatever happens, and depending on the weather, the ski resort might remain open another three weeks, perhaps four, if the said association has its way.
Last year it closed on the 16th of April and the last time that it stayed open into May was winter 2018/2019, when it closed on the 5th of May
The trouble is that with the arrival of warmer weather, holidaymakers are beginning to eye the beaches, so the ski resort will have a spot of competition. Yet, it’s worth hanging on to May because this year the skiing season started late due to a lack of snowfall until after Christmas.
